I think I owe you an apology. Last month I got a bit cross at the fact that IE6 users had increased in percentage. Now, according to the browser statistics at w3schools.com, that was still the case however I have since discovered that these stats are based on visitors visiting the w3schools site only and therefore do not give an accurate portrayal of browser use across the whole internet.

The problem with the w3schools.com site is that it tends to get visited primarily by techies and nerds who wear librarian green corduroy jeans and plimsoles. What we want is a more general 'market research' type range of internet users, you know, the type that includes single mums who shop in Aldi and other terrible sweeping generalisations.

Back in 1988 Tracey Chopman changed the face of world music by crossing the cultural divide between music and web design with her seminal classic Talkin' Bout A Resolution. A hit single off her debut album, the singer/songwriter tackled the theme of social economics set against the backdrop of the eternal class struggle between the Haves - 30" HD LCD 2560×1600 resolution monitor - and the Have Nots - 10" second-hand Compaq laptop with a bit of dried yoghurt on the top left corner.

Chopman, who often dabbled in various web-coding practices to relieve the boredom between tours, became the voice of the masses. She was able to express the unenviable daily struggle of viewing websites on crappy little displays through the power of her lyrics:

William Defoe logs out

See that picture? You think that's Sgt. Elias drawing his final breath in the classic death scene from Oliver Stone's Platoon. Well it's not. That's one of the Fat Heads reacting to the news about the latest brower statistics for November.

IE6 has gone back up from 10.6% to 11.1% as the internet browser of choice. Someone is feeding the beast. It's only 0.5% I know (which probably just constitutes a light snack and some cordial) but it's still a sandwich in the wrong direction.

IE6 Jason

The latest up-to-date browser statistics for October 2009 are out and the popularity of IE6 as the internet browser of choice has dropped from 12.1% down to 10.6%.

Fat Heads are fully behind the complete annihilation of Internet Explorer 6 as are many of our web design brethren. We won't bore you with the complete history and list of problems that IE6 causes due to it's incompatibility as it is has already been well-documented on the web but we're glad to see it desperately hovering above the 10% mark. Unfortunately unlike IE5 and now IE7 (down to 14.7%), IE6, like Jason in Friday the 13th: Part XXVII, just won't die.

Testimonials

  • Pete Fitzpatrick, PR Manager, Treasure Island "The team at Treasure Island Soft Play Ltd are delighted with Fat Heads contribution to Treasure Island's corporate identity in print and online. They have taken our brief & developed some great characters that fit perfectly into to our strategy. We have had some great feedback already from our Facebook friends – we can’t wait to see the finished website. A big Thank You to Rick & Sean."
  • Terri Holt, Office Manager, Six Recruitment "Having had difficulties with a previous web design company, Fat Heads stepped into the breach and made it all happen. We are very pleased with the web site and have had a number of extremely complementary calls from clients and candidates. On a personal note, I would like to thank the team for their patience when dealing with someone who is not really the best person to manage a site. Through a period of specialist training which involved knowledge sharing and patience I have learned a lot."
